It’s a good weekend to be by the Philly waterfront—the picturesque area is gearing up for a multi-day celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, full of fireworks, live music, public art, soccer festivities and family-friendly programming.
Dubbed America 250 Weekend on the Waterfront, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will transform Cherry Street Pier, Spruce Street Harbor Park and Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest into hubs of activity from June 26 to 28. The three-day celebration is part of the broader Wawa Welcome America Festival, and promises something for visitors of all ages.
The celebration begins Friday evening at Spruce Street Harbor Park with the debut of PrismaPhonik: A Magical Stroll Through Music and Light. Created by artists William Simard and Anthony Gagnon Boisvert in collaboration with Philadelphia-based performers and composers, the creative work invites visitors to wander through a maze of illuminated prisms that respond with sound and light. The opening night festivities will also feature a performance by indie rock band Oso Oso. Plus, roller skaters and music lovers can head to the RiverRink at Summerfest for Roll Call Fridays, featuring DJs, dancing and pop-up performances.
Saturday's lineup stretches from morning to night. Visitors can browse vintage finds, antiques and artisan goods at Liberty Flea inside Cherry Street Pier before heading to Spruce Street Harbor Park for a waterfront Tai Chi session. Later in the afternoon, the nationally acclaimed Men in Blazers Match Day Live will bring its signature blend of soccer storytelling, commentary and fan engagement to the Waterfront ahead of Philadelphia's Croatia vs. Ghana match, followed by a public watch party. At Cherry Street Pier, Cosmic Rhythms will host an evening dedicated to vinyl culture, DJs and community dancing. The day's finale will take place at Summerfest with a performance by Tommy Conwell & The Young Rumblers and a fireworks spectacular over the Delaware River (one of the weekend's marquee events).
The celebration concludes Sunday with a family-focused day along the Waterfront. Liberty Flea returns to the Pier, and Spruce Street Harbor Park will host its Family Fun Day, featuring hands-on arts, crafts and STEM-inspired activities.
Together, the weekend's events plan to act as a gathering place for creativity, community and celebration during the nation's 250th anniversary.
“This is a landmark year for Philadelphia, and the Waterfront is ready to celebrate in a big way,” says Joseph A. Forkin, President & CEO of DRWC. “We are proud to welcome residents and visitors alike to the Waterfront for an unforgettable weekend of fireworks, family fun, music, soccer, and more as we come together to celebrate Philadelphia and reflect on our city’s past, present, and future.”
