A 14-year-old boy was fighting for his life after being shot Sunday night in Mayfair, authorities said.

The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. on the 3300 block of Aldine Street, according to police. The teenager was taken in a private vehicle to Nazareth Hospital before being transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where he was in critical condition, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators said a person of interest was immediately taken into custody, and the PPD  identified him Tuesday as 24-year-old Malik Gbayor. He has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Police described the motive for the shooting as "theft." Members of the crime scene unit recovered five 9mm spent shell casings and a gun at the scene, authorities added.

Gbayor's bail has been set at 10% of $100,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 23. His legal counsel could not be identified through court records.
