The 21st annual Danny Rumph Classic was a roaring success in what has become one of the premier basketball tournaments in Philadelphia. Basketball players who have roots in and ties to the city have shown up and shown out over the years to support the community and the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation.
Danny Rumph tragically passed away in 2005 due to a heart condition. A basketball tournament was started in his honor and has blossomed into something much greater over the last two decades. The Rumph Classic has become one of Philadelphia's hallmark events for bringing people together and sharing in the power of sport and camaraderie.
Over the years, the tournament has seen notable players like Tyrese Maxey, James Harden, Markieff and Marcus Morris, and Jalen Brunson suit up. With big-name appearances on the court and in the stands and consistently packed crowds, this tournament continues to shine, as does its impact on the city.
This year, Phoenix Suns point guard Collin Gillespie returned for a second appearance, and Sacramento Kings wing De'Andre Hunter took the stage, both looking to add their names to the growing list of greats who have passed through the Daskalakis Athletic Center at Drexel University.
On Friday night, one of the newest Sixers, Jaylen Brown, attended the tournament alongside Justin Edwards. Community focus is one of the pillars of Brown's brand, and after hosting his introductory press conference the day before at a recreation center in the city for that very reason, he doubled down by showing up to the Rumph Classic. Given his passion for community involvement, do not rule out Brown playing in the tournament over the next couple of years as he acclimates to the city.
Monday night's championship game was a thrilling matchup that capped off another successful Rumph Classic. With Meek Mill and Gillie Da Kid sitting in the front row, the energy inside the building was palpable.
Former Villanova star and current Phoenix Sun Collin Gillespie showed up to represent his hometown community and helped lead Team TBB to victory over Team Rumph Center in a 103-101 battle. Gillespie finished the game with 19 points, five rebounds and six assists.
"This is where I come from. I will never forget that," Gillespie said.
Former Sixer and Delaware Blue Coat Tyrese Martin was named MVP of the championship game, tallying 33 points and 14 rebounds. He overcame some poor shooting early on, but when he found his rhythm, he was the best player on the court.
"My name is going to be on that banner forever as long as the Rumph is going," Martin said after being named MVP. "Put on for Allentown, put on for Philly, and show out."
