Police say the driver, a 39-year-old man, fled after the crash before turning himself in hours later.

A driver turned himself in hours after fleeing the scene of a crash that left a bicyclist in “extremely critical condition” Sunday night in Harrowgate, police said.

The collision happened at around 8:45 p.m. at the corner of Tioga and Jasper streets, according to law enforcement officials. Investigators believe someone behind the wheel of a Honda Pilot ran a red light while going south on Jasper and hit a man who was riding east on Tioga.

Medics took the victim, whose age has not been provided, to Temple University Hospital, where he was fighting for his life Monday morning, authorities said.

At around midnight, the driver, a 39-year-old man, showed up to the 24th District police station and began cooperating with detectives, the PPD stated. His SUV was towed to be used as evidence, officials added.

The driver has not yet been publicly identified, and law enforcement has not announced any charges.

The crash happened on the same day as a memorial marking two years since the death of Barbara Friedes, a 30-year-old Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia doctor who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding her bike on Spruce Street in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood.

Friedes’ death helped inspire a wave of activism aimed at installing concrete bike lane barriers along Spruce and Pine streets in Center City. Plans to make those changes have been stalled by litigation brought by neighbors opposed to the redesign.
