The Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of RB Dameon Pierce on Thursday. The former Houston Texan will join the team on a one-year deal.
Pierce was a fourth-round pick of the Texans back in 2022 and spent the opening four years of his career in Houston before a one-year stint with the Chiefs. After exploding for 939 yards in his rookie year, Pierce lost the Lions' share of carries to Devin Singletary, and later Joe Mixon. These moves drastically harmed his production. His rushing yards have dropped every year since then, and a stint in the chaotic Chiefs backfield wasn't enough to show signs of life.
It's been a strange career to follow. Pierce had all the intangibles of a future RB1 but the Texans were abrupt in seeking out proven veteran talent which stifled his chances of growing. Perhaps greener pastures can help relight that fire.
He now joins a similarly stacked backfield led by Saquon Barkley and backed up by the likes of Will Shipley, A.J Dillon, and Tank Bigsby. It's certainly one of the more competitive running back rooms in Football, and fighting for snaps won't be easy. We don't yet know if the Eagles plan to move on from any of the names mentioned above, but needless to say that Pierce will have his work cut out from him when it comes to standing out from the crowd.
With that said, an embarassment of riches is rarely a bad problem to have and the Eagles have an abundance of talent supporting Barkley for the time being.
