The Philadelphia Flyers ended their five-game homestand with a disappointing loss. After consecutive shootout wins and a 4–1 victory over Nashville, their momentum faltered in a 5–2 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where they were outplayed throughout.
Sunday’s matchup against the Calgary Flames should have been an easier opportunity for the Flyers to bounce back, considering Calgary entered the game ranked 32nd in the NHL and struggling early this season. Despite being without several key players, the Flames proved to be the better team on paper and on the ice. Jonathan Huberdeau scored both goals for Calgary, outsmarting Flyers goaltender Aleksei Kolosov, who made his first start of the season.
While Kolosov’s size gives him a natural advantage in net, his positioning and reactions looked shaky, especially compared to Flames goalie Dustin Wolf. After the game, Wolf called it a “boring” contest — a good sign for his team — while Kolosov expressed that he worked hard all summer and had a strong training camp. Still, the most important thing for any young goalie is getting consistent reps in the crease.
The Flyers avoided a shutout thanks to Travis Konecny, who scored his fourth goal of the season on a one-timer late in regulation. Despite that late spark, the team’s overall performance lacked energy and urgency. Philadelphia spent little time in the offensive zone and appeared disengaged for most of the night, drawing boos from frustrated fans between periods.
While back-to-back games can be difficult, they’ll be even more common this season due to the upcoming Olympic break in February. Another growing concern is Matvei Michkov’s inability to create offense or make an impact under coach Rick Tocchet’s current system. Michkov has looked unusually subdued — a worrying sign for a player considered to be the Flyers’ rising star.
The Flyers will re-evaluate forward Tyson Foerster, who missed Sunday’s game, in the coming days. Goaltender Sam Ersson remains sidelined with no update on his status. The team has Monday off before hitting the road for a two-game trip against the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
