Flyers force overtime against Kraken but still lack the final ingredient

Posted

The Philadelphia Flyers rallied from a two-goal deficit Tuesday night but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Seattle Kraken in a shootout, extending their winless start to eight games. Despite showing signs of life in the third period, Philadelphia remains without a victory at 0-5-3, and the frustration continues to build.

Seattle took a 2-0 lead through the first two periods, putting the Flyers in another difficult position. Philadelphia finally responded in the third, with Christian Dvorak cutting the deficit to one after a beautiful passing play initiated by rookie defenseman Oliver Bonk. Just 73 seconds later, Trevor Zegras tied the game, finishing a setup from Travis Sanheim to bring the Flyers back to life.

Goaltender Dan Vladar gave Philadelphia a strong lifeline throughout the night, stopping 29 shots through overtime and denying Jordan Eberle on a second-period penalty shot. Bonk also delivered an encouraging performance, contributing offensively after a difficult previous outing. However, the Flyers could not find a winning goal in overtime, and a too-many-men penalty late in the extra period nearly proved costly.

The game ultimately went to a shootout, where Matvei Michkov scored with an impressive move, but Seattle's Matty Beniers and Bobby McMann found the net to secure the victory. McMann's goal in the fifth round ended Philadelphia's hopes of finally breaking through.

There were positives to take away from the comeback, particularly the offensive spark from Zegras and Dvorak and the effort from Vladar. But the Flyers cannot continue relying on third-period rallies to compensate for slow starts and inconsistent play. The ability to fight back is encouraging, but moral victories will not change their position in the standings.

Philadelphia needs to find a way to play a complete 60 minutes, eliminate avoidable mistakes, and start generating offense earlier in games. With the winless streak now at eight games, the pressure is mounting on Rick Tocchet and his team to turn these flashes of improvement into an actual victory. The Flyers have shown they can compete, but until they put together a complete performance, the same questions will continue to follow them.
