Two events are headed to the historic and picturesque Glen Foerd estate, and both lean into this baroque time of year in their own way.
First, the Not So Silent Cinema is making a return to the grounds this Thursday, Oct. 15, for a screening of the Danish horror film 'Vampyr.' The 1932 feature will be accompanied by local composer Brendan Cooney’s original score, performed live by an ensemble.
Directed by Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer, organizers note the art-house classic ultimately “draws audiences into a dreamlike world where wandering shadows, ghostly figures and seemingly ordinary landscapes evoke a creeping sense of dread” through hazy cinematography and experimental storytelling.
Admission is $25 for general entry and $20 for students and seniors, and tickets for the screening (which will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.) are available online.
Then, later this month, Glen Foerd will transform its grounds for its annual Masquerade Ball charity once again. Set for Friday, Oct. 30, this year’s theme has been dubbed “A Carnival of Curiosities” and draws inspiration from traveling carnivals and vintage sideshows.
On that evening, performers will bring the estate to life with fire dancing, juggling and other circus acts, plus, the event will also host tarot readers, sword swallowers and other “mysterious characters.” Attendees are additionally encouraged to dress for the theme with attire inspired by vintage carnivals or gothic glamour, with masks welcome.
The celebration will feature a seated dinner, full open bar, live music by the West Philadelphia Orchestra, dancing, auctions and after-hours access to the historic mansion and grounds. The evening will conclude with an after-party in the estate’s Rathskeller (a basement/cellar) until midnight. General admission tickets are $250 per person and include access to the after-party, with complimentary valet parking provided.
"Every year, the Masquerade Ball offers guests the chance to experience Glen Foerd in a completely unexpected way," says Ross Mitchell, executive director of Glen Foerd in a statement. "This year's carnival-inspired experience celebrates imagination, artistry and a touch of the uncanny while helping ensure that Glen Foerd remains a vibrant cultural destination for the Philadelphia region."
The Masquerade Ball at Glen Foerd (5001 Grant Ave.) runs from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, followed by the after-party until midnight. For tickets and sponsorship information, visit glenfoerd.org, email Scott Reynolds at scott@glenfoerd.org or call 215-632-5330.
