Breaking: Jalen Hurts to miss clash with Panthers due to superficial blood clot

The Eagles' quarterback has been dealing with the clot for multiple weeks

Posted

According to a report from Ian Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles will be without Jalen Hurts for Sunday's game against the Panthers. The franchise QB has a superficial blood clot that the team has been monitoring for a few weeks now, as Rapoport explains.

The Eagles released the following statement:

'On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report.

Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.

Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter.

On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.'

The news comes as a shock, but the main thing is that the team does right by its quarterback while options are evaluated. This is something that is naturally much larger than football and while he may have been able to play as he did in London, caution absolutely has to be taken. The follow-up ultrasound could well have prevented this from becoming much more serious.

What doesn't bode well from a team perspective is the fact that the Eagles recently released Andy Dalton, leaving Tanner McKee and Cole Payton as backup quarterbacks, with the former likely getting the nod to start against Carolina.

The Eagles are already missing a myriad of starters and dealing with a depleted offensive line. Losing Jalen Hurts, even if it's just for one week, is a huge hit to their chances of winning this weekend against an ascending Panthers team.

Of course, the main thing is that Jalen gets the treatment he needs and hopefully makes a quick recovery from whatever that treatment involves. In terms of an outlook for the team, the odds are only continuing to stack against them.
