Joel Embiid listed probable for Sixers vs. Celtics Game 5

The Philadelphia 76ers' season is hanging by a thread, but their franchise cornerstone will be on the floor for what could be their final game of the year. Joel Embiid has been listed as probable for Game 5 of the Sixers' first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics in Boston on Thursday night, according to the team's injury report released Monday. The designation signals that the big man is fully expected to suit up, giving Philadelphia its best fighting chance to extend the series.

Embiid’s availability has been the central storyline of this series due to a sudden and serious health scare. The reigning MVP was able to appear for Game 4 just days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on April 9. His return to the court came so quickly after his abdominal surgery that it raised eyebrows across the league. However, the big man proved his toughness by logging 34 minutes in the losing effort.

His rapid recovery to even step on a playoff floor was nothing short of an extraordinary testament to his physical conditioning and his relentless determination to fight for his team. Despite Embiid's gutsy return in Game 4, the Sixers were unable to capitalize.

Embiid posted 26 points while playing 34 minutes on the night, shooting 9-for-21 from the floor, but the Sixers were blown out by the Celtics 128-96. It was a sobering result for a Philadelphia team desperate for a spark. Boston's defense was relentless; their offense was surgical, and the Celtics made it abundantly clear why they remain one of the most dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Sixers trail the series 3-1 following the blowout loss and will need to dig deep to keep their season alive on the road. No NBA team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series, and 3-1 comebacks remain exceedingly rare. Only about 4.4% of teams that face a 3-1 deficit manage to come back and win the series, accounting for 13 successful comebacks out of 297 in NBA playoff history. Philadelphia will need not just Embiid at his best, but also a collective effort, sharpened perimeter shooting, defensive intensity, and composure under immense pressure.

Beyond Embiid, the Sixers’ injury report is relatively clean, meaning the rest of the starting unit is expected to be available. For Philadelphia, the math is simple: win or go home. Having a probable Joel Embiid gives them a puncher’s chance to force a Game 6. History has never been kind to teams in the Sixers' position, but it remains to be seen whether the Sixers will make a successful comeback to etch their name into the history books, becoming the 14th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

Whoever wins this series will face off against either the New York Knicks or the Atlanta Hawks in the second round, with that series tied 2-2 heading into Tuesday night. Game 5 is set to be played on Thursday, April 30, at the TD Garden in Boston.
