Joel Embiid: ‘I don’t think I can be stopped’ after Game 5 win

Posted

Staring down elimination on the road against one of the most dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia 76ers delivered one of the most memorable playoff performances in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics. The odds were stacked against them in every conceivable way, a 3-1 series deficit. Yet when the final buzzer sounded Tuesday night in Boston, it was the Sixers who were celebrating, their season still breathing, their spirit undeniable, and their hopes very much alive.

Embiid’s availability was the central storyline of this series due to a sudden and serious health scare. He underwent an emergency appendectomy on April 9, yet showed up for Game 4 just weeks later, logging 34 minutes in the team’s loss.

The Philadelphia 76ers center delivered one of the most dominant playoff performances of his career in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics, leading them to a stunning 113-97 victory that kept their season alive. And when the final buzzer sounded, Embiid had a message for the rest of the NBA.

"I feel pretty good about my chances of going one-on-one against anybody in this league," Embiid said in his postgame press conference. "I don't think I can be stopped. So I just took advantage of what they were giving me, and once when they made the adjustment, I tried to do the best job possible."

Joel Embiid, playing just his second game back from an emergency appendectomy that had threatened to end his postseason before it even began, was nothing short of breathtaking. He scored 33 points, finishing the night as the best player in the building by a considerable margin while Tyrese Maxey delivered 25 points and 10 rebounds. Together, they spearheaded a collective effort that silenced a stunned TD Garden crowd and sent the Philadelphia 76ers back home with renewed life.

Embiid was equally reflective in his postgame comments, taking a moment to address the persistent criticism that has followed him throughout his career. Despite missing the first three games of this series, and returning to play just days after surgery, there are still those who question his commitment and durability.

"I've dealt with a lot of stuff over my career," Embiid said. "I don't complain, I just want to give as much as I can. I know a lot of people might have takes that I might be lazy or whatever, but every single time I'm on the floor I want to play as hard as possible."

With Embiid brimming with confidence and carrying the kind of belief that cannot be manufactured, only earned, it remains to be seen whether the Sixers can make a successful comeback and etch themselves into the history books, a feat only 13 teams in NBA history have accomplished. The series now stands at 3-2, and Game 6 tips off on April 30 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
