Those interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement have two weeks left to apply for a position in the Philadelphia Police Department.

The latest application window for the department – the nation’s fourth largest – opened Sept. 14 and will close Sunday, Oct. 11. Recruits can receive a $2,000 signing bonus, PPD officials said.

Prospective officers must be U.S. citizens who are at least 20 years old. Applicants must also have a driver’s license and a high school diploma or equivalent. Individuals who live outside city limits have a year-and-a-half from their hire date to establish Philadelphia residency.

After filling out an online form, recruits will be tasked with passing a reading test. A physical assessment follows, with applicants having to hit certain benchmarks based on their age and gender in a 300-meter run, pushups, sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run.

Recruits will then undergo a personal history questionnaire, background investigation, medical evaluation, polygraph assessment and psychological evaluation. Those selected to advance in the process will be enrolled in 38 weeks of training at the police academy.

The starting yearly pay for recruits is just under $70,000. Officers reach a maximum of about $104,000 after five years of service.
