Philadelphia street sweeping program returns, adding more blocks

The program targets 14 Philadelphia neighborhoods based on litter conditions.

Street sweepers are back for the season, and they will be hitting more blocks this year.

Crews returned Monday and will be cleaning 14 neighborhoods across Philadelphia with mechanical brooms, sidewalk sweepers, blowers and other equipment on a weekly basis through the end of October.

Mayor Cherelle Parker’s administration expanded the Frankford, Kensington, Logan, North Central, Port Richmond, Strawberry Mansion, West Fairhill and West Philly sweeping zones. The designated blocks in Germantown, Nicetown, Paschall, Point Breeze and South Philly remain unchanged from last year’s program. Maps with detailed boundaries are posted at phila.gov/mechanical-street-cleaning.

Each of the areas were prioritized through a survey of litter conditions, according to the city’s Department of Sanitation.

Drivers will need to move their cars off of select blocks within each of the zones, officials said. On some blocks, due to the width of the road, vehicles do not have to be relocated, the sanitation department added.

Residents are advised to abide by “No Parking” notices posted in the sweeping areas. This week is serving as a warning period, though fines will begin going out to violators starting Monday, April 13, officials said. On the blocks that were just added to the program for the first time this year, enforcement will be delayed further to allow for neighbors to be notified, according to the department.

Cleaning occurs Monday to Thursday, excluding city holidays.

Philadelphians are invited to attend Zoom meetings about the program with a presentation and question-and-answer session on Wednesday, April 8, at 6 p.m. and Friday, April 10 at noon. An initial meeting was held Monday morning.
