Two men were killed and at least four other people were injured in gun violence that occurred over the weekend across Philadelphia.
Just after 4:15 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the 2900 block of W. Clementine Street in North Philadelphia, where they found a 42-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to his chest, left leg, right arm and right hip area, police said. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital and was declared dead a short time later.
In Southwest Philadelphia, authorities discovered a man in his mid-50s who had been shot once in his lower back at around 9:45 a.m. Saturday inside a home on the 6500 block of Regent Street, according to law enforcement officials. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
No arrests were reported in the immediate aftermath of either killing, and the PPD has not commented on possible motives. Police have not publicly identified either victim.
A woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after she was shot just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the 3300 block of N. Smedley Street in the Tioga section of North Philadelphia, investigators said.
She told officers that she got into an argument with someone who was “acting erratically on the street,” the PPD said in an incident report. The person opened up a silver sedan, pulled out a black gun and fired a single shot, which hit the victim in the shoulder, police recounted.
Law enforcement said a 20-year-old woman was wounded in an accidental shooting that happened at around 11:15 p.m. Saturday on the 200 block of W. Spencer Street in Olney.
A 22-year-old man, described as the son of her father’s girlfriend, was handling a gun when it went off, according to authorities. The bullet hit the woman in her right arm, and she was taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said.
The man had a valid permit and surrendered the firearm to officers. Investigators said he is being charged with reckless endangerment and simple assault.
Authorities found a bullet-ridden sedan outside North Philadelphia’s Temple University Hospital after a man in his 20s walked into the emergency room just before 6 a.m. Saturday with two gunshot wounds to his chest. The victim is expected to survive.
Police believe he was shot earlier on the 4900 block of Old York Road in Logan. There, officials recovered a dozen .223-caliber fired cartridge casings.
Earlier, at around 3 a.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man walked into the same hospital after being shot in his left thigh and left wrist, the PPD said. He told officers that the shooting had occurred at the Belmont Plateau in West Fairmount Park.
Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call or text the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
Through Aug. 1, 98 people had been murdered in Philadelphia, a decrease of about 27% compared to the same date last year, according to PPD data. The number of shooting victims is also down 35%.
