Phillies officially sign highly-touted international prospect Francisco Renteria

The start of the 2026 International signing period has arrived. While many international players have already agreed to sign with their respective clubs prior to the official date, January 15th marks the official start of the signing period.

It was prior knowledge that the Philadelphia Phillies were in line to land one of the top international prospects in 17-year-old outfielder Francisco Renteria. Today, it became official with the the third-ranked international prospect in this year’s class signing for $4 million, per Ben Badler of Baseball America.

It marks the second straight season that the Phillies’ top international signing hails from Venezuela after signing shortstop Nieves Izaguirre, cousin of Ronald Acuna Jr.

Renteria has generated a ton of buzz and excitement when it comes to his tools. Per MLB Pipeline, Renteria grades are very favorable, grading as an overall 60 prospect (Grade is 20-80) thanks to his 65-grade in power and 60-grade run, hit and fielding tools. His arm is the lowest graded tool at 55.

Hailing from Maracaibo, a hot-bed for MLB talent including Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio and Milwaukee Brewers young phenom Jackson Chourio, Renteria is certainly someone to keep an eye on as he progresses in his career stateside.

While it will take some time to reach the upper minor, Renteria has already received high praise and has been compared to MLB Pipeline’s top prospect in the game in Konnor Griffin of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, scouts at Baseball America think his power could become a calling card for the young outfielder.

“When he’s on time, that power translates in games, especially against fastballs, though he has been more susceptible to quality breaking pitches. It’s likely a power-over-hit profile with the upside to become a 30-plus home run threat,” according to Ben Badler of the publication.

There is no doubt Renteria has some serious potential and could become an elite, young talent in the organization down the road.
