An 84-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet during an apparent shootout Wednesday in North Philadelphia, law enforcement officials said.

Police said officers responded at around 5:15 p.m. to the 2300 block of N. Gratz Street, and found the victim on the front steps of her home suffering from a gunshot wound to the right side of her back. She was rushed to Temple University Hospital and is expected to survive, according to authorities.

PPD Chief Inspector Scott Small told television crews at the scene that investigators recovered more than 40 spent shell casings fired by at least two different weapons. Officers also discovered a gun inside an abandoned, bullet-ridden white sedan that had been left running after crashing into and knocking down a utility pole, he added.

No one was arrested in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call or text the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

Police data shows that 537 people have been shot this year, down 28% compared to the same date in 2025.
