Both teenagers accused of killing 22-year-old Billy Schmidt during a robbery last month in South Philadelphia are in police custody.
Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was apprehended at the home of a distant relative in Colorado Springs, Colorado, “after attempting to deny his identity,” U.S. Marshals Service Philadelphia posted Wednesday night on X, formerly Twitter. USMS Philadelphia stated that Outen-Fleming was taken to a youth detention facility in Colorado and is awaiting extradition.
Kaiseem Smith, also 16, surredered to Philadelphia police, USMS said Thursday afternoon.
The pair of fugitives were both behind bars a day after the District Attorney’s Office named them as the primary suspects in Schmidt’s murder and released their photographs in an attempt to solicit tips.
Prosecutors announced Wednesday that Outen-Fleming’s stepfather, Donte Abdulmalik, 35, had been arrested for allegedly driving the teen to Colorado in an effort to avoid arrest in Philadelphia.
Charges have also been approved against Outen-Fleming's older brother, 19-year-old Kadafi Fleming, for stealing and later trying to discard the Nissan used in the robbery and shooting, according to an investigation report obtained by Metro. It is not clear whether he has been apprehended.
Outen-Fleming and Smith are expected to be charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy and weapons violations, according to the DA’s Office. A source told detectives that the two are cousins, courts records show.
Investigators believe Smith shot Schmidt, a Pennsylvania State University student, after the teens jumped the victim early on the morning of June 6 at 20th and Durfor streets.
