A change is on the horizon for the Philadelphia Eagles. Perhaps not this season, but soon.
As first reported by Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is preparing to retire from his role, a source familiar with the situation has confirmed to Philly Sports Network.
According to that source, Fangio has been mulling over retirement both during and immediately after the season. The departure of DB coach Christian Parker to the Dallas Cowboys would only further complicate the decision. Parker was certainly a candidate to replace Fangio should the veteran have decided it was time to walk away, but he instead took a role as defensive coordinator with Philly's biggest rival in a surprising move.
There has also been mention by a source of Parker’s potential interest in returning to Philadelphia down the line, but in a head coaching capacity.
The team has not issued a public statement yet, but internal discussions about succession planning are already underway.
Fangio has spent two seasons in Philadelphia, and his defense was an integral part of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl in 2024. His defense put on a masterful performance against the Chiefs, dominating Patrick Mahomes to get revenge on their loss two years prior.
He also pushed the Eagles through an impressive defense stretch last season, showing they were one of the best units and the league and could anchor a NFC contender, despite postseason disappointment.
The Eagles do have in-house options should anything come to pass, but it's not like internal hires have surpassed expectations in recent years.
