Mummers once again strutted their stuff on Thursday, ringing in the new year in true Philly style.
Philadelphians and visitors braved chilly weather and high winds to witness the beloved tradition. This year marked the 125th anniversary of the Mummers Parade, which started at City Hall before marching south along Broad Street to Washington Avenue.
The Mummers are one of the city’s oldest and most unique traditions, with roots that date back centuries. By the early 19th century, Philadelphians were already celebrating New Year’s Day by dressing up, parading through the streets, and visiting homes. The parade was officially organized in 1901.
The Mummers Parade is made up of different groups — Comic (focusing on humor), Fancy (elaborate costumes), Fancy Brigade (which is now performed indoors) and String Bands (with groups that normally march in intricate patterns).
