A group of people fought off a man after he attacked another person with an “unknown sharp object” Sunday night near City Hall, police said.

Officers were called just after 9 p.m. to the area of 15th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard in Center City for a report of someone with a weapon, according to law enforcement officials.

Witnesses told police that a verbal dispute had escalated into a fight, with the suspect producing the object and hitting a 50-year-old man several times in the back of the head, authorities said. About a dozen people intervened, punching and kicking the attacker, police added.

A 37-year-old man suffered a cut to his left arm, the PPD stated. Both he and the other victim were taken to Jefferson University Hospital to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, investigators said.

Police said the suspect was last spotted fleeing south on 15th. Anyone with information is asked to call or text the PPD tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477). Information can be shared anonymously.
