After acquiring LeBron James, the Philadelphia 76ers are set to make another acquisition as veteran wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope "intends" to sign with the Sixers, according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes.
Caldwell-Pope, 33, is negotiating a buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies after exercising his $21.6 million player option last month. He appeared in 51 games for Memphis last season, averaging 8.4 points on 41.0% shooting from the field and 31.6% shooting from three.
Over his career, Caldwell-Pop carved out a role in the NBA as a above average 3-and-D wing, with his best years played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Denver Nuggets.
Since leaving Denver following the 2023-2024 offseason, Caldwell-Pope has struggled to find his footing, shooting only 33.3% from beyond the arc in his last two seasons for both the Magic and the Grizzlies.
While not the same player he used to be, Caldwell-Pope's most impressive play has been as a complementary player alongside high-end playmakers. A two-time NBA champion, Caldwell-Pope was an impressive 37.8% shooter with LeBron and the Lakers, as well as a 41.5% shooter during his two years alongside Nikola Jokic. In Philadelphia, he will have the opportunity to play off of four legitimate superstar-caliber players, while providing some needed depth.
For the Sixers to make this move, they will need to clear up another roster spot and room below the first apron. Without a trade, the only possible way to do so would be by cutting both Dalen Terry and Jabari Walker. Terry's contract is non-guaranteed until Jan. 2027, while Walker's is partially guaranteed for $250,00
Once this signing is complete, Caldwell-Pope will reunite with LeBron James after the pair helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship.
