Philadelphia’s music scene took center stage over the weekend as The Roots welcomed a sold-out crowd of 80,000 fans to the largest Roots Picnic in the festival’s history.
Held for the first time at Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park, the two-day celebration brought together some of the biggest names in hip-hop, R&B and soul, while highlighting the community-focused spirit that has defined the festival since its launch.
The weekend’s most talked-about moment came Saturday night when Jay-Z joined The Roots for a headlining set marking the 30th anniversary of his landmark debut album, 'Reasonable Doubt.' The performance featured surprise appearances from Philadelphia favorites Meek Mill, Jazmine Sullivan and Bilal, along with a State Property reunion that brought Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Peedi Crakk and Young Gunz back to the stage together.
Also on Saturday, Jermaine Dupri delivered a hit-filled set featuring guests including Bow Wow and Da Brat, while R&B icon Brandy made her Roots Picnic debut. DJ Jazzy Jeff hosted a Philadelphia-themed block party featuring local legends, and festivalgoers also enjoyed a special celebration honoring 50 years of Go-Go music.
The momentum continued Sunday with performances from Erykah Badu, Kehlani and T.I., each drawing massive crowds. Adam Blackstone also paid tribute to the 30th anniversary of the 'Waiting to Exhale' soundtrack, bringing together artists including Yolanda Adams, Ledisi, Tamar Braxton and Andra Day for a memorable showcase of songs from the beloved film.
The fourth annual Roots Picnic Con kicked off festival weekend with conversations and panels about music education, financial literacy, tech, health and wellness, and more. The event featured speakers from business, government and entertainment, while additional festivities included the annual celebrity basketball game hosted by Gillie and Wallo267.
Over nearly two decades, the Roots Picnic has grown from a local gathering into one of the country’s premier music festivals, earning national recognition while remaining deeply connected to Philadelphia. This year’s record-breaking turnout and star-studded lineup reinforced the festival’s reputation as a celebration of music, culture and community—and one of the city’s signature summer events.
