If there were ever a year for Philadelphia to take a victory lap, 2026 would be it. From milestone anniversaries and major cultural debuts to immersive art and blockbuster exhibitions, the city is gearing up for a calendar packed with history-making moments.
America250 (also called the Semiquincentennial) marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The City of Brotherly Love happens to play a huge part in that history, and they are celebrating in big ways with year-long activations and campaigns. Throughout 2026, locals can find new public art (like decorated Liberty Bell sculptures dubbed Bells Across PA), block parties, beautification and cleaning projects, historical tours and much, much more.
To celebrate the country’s 250th birthday, the city is highlighting 52 historic and ingenious firsts that began here in Philadelphia. 2026 will be sprinkled with different events and activations honoring inaugural events like the First Public Girl Scout Cookie Sale (Jan. 31), First Flower Show (March 7), First Circus Performance in America (April 11), First American Flag (June 6), First Organized Baseball Team (July 11), First Zoo in America (Aug. 6), First Ronald McDonald House (Sept. 26), First Modern Detective Story Written (Oct. 31), First Electronic Computer (Dec. 12) and more.
Saturday Firstivals will also be held every Saturday of the occasion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Jan. 3 to Dec. 26, 2026. As a release cites, each Firstival will feature a brief opening ceremony, a Once Upon A Nation storyteller sharing the true tale of that week’s first, family activities, giveaways, music, entertainment, selfie stations, and the unveiling of a #1 sculpture representing that milestone. The celebration will also feature different murals debuting around the city, photo quests, legacy projects, and a companion 52 Weeks of Firsts Podcast that will debut in early 2026, featuring conversations with historians, artists, and storytellers.
Visit Philadelphia, in partnership with Visit PA and Philadelphia Gay News, is launching the Philly Pride Visitor Center, one of the first LGBTQ+ visitor centers in the country. Set to open in January, the center marks a long-term commitment to building inclusive tourism that celebrates and serves the city’s diverse communities for years to come.
Once open, the Philly Pride Center will offer visitor services (spanning itinerary planning, attraction ticketing, and travel information) with a special focus on LGBTQ+-affirming destinations, businesses, and cultural institutions. The Center will also offer a curated selection of souvenirs, most of which will be from LGBTQ+-owned businesses.
Tickets are now on sale for the world premiere of 'Universal Theme Parks: The Exhibition', which opens on Valentine’s Day at The Franklin Institute. As a release notes, created by The FI in collaboration with Universal Destinations & Experiences and the award-winning creative design firm MDSX, the first-of-its-kind exhibition offers an immersive exploration into the storytelling, innovation, and world-building of Universal’s legendary creations, from The World-Famous Studio Tour to the all-new Universal Epic Universe. Visitors will be able to peruse around exhibits showcasing the brand’s animatronics, robotics, ride design, costuming, special effects and more.
Meg Saligman’s latest creation has set its sights on the spring of 2026, and with this latest project, Philadelphians can become part of the interactive and multisensory art experience themselves. Ministry of Awe (MoA) will open the doors to its Philly headquarters on March 14 and its experience is officially described as one that unravels into art, mystery, imagination, and playful exploration. Throughout the multi-level venue, visitors can expect performance artists, towering installations, interactive sculptures, live art, and immersive soundscapes.
The showcase is the result of a collaboration with Saligman and over 100 artists, makers, spirits, and shadows. What locals will find in the once-abandoned 19th-century bank is a six-story work of art that will “ break into your brain and seize your senses.”
When many think of Philadelphia, they think of ‘Rocky’, and the 1976 film is celebrating its 50th anniversary in a big way this year. RockyFest 50 will take place throughout 2026, with celebrations happening at the Rocky statue and other locations that have ties to the film. A lot of the happenings will be debuting in the fall, and fans can learn more information from the Philadelphia Visitor Center and the Sly Stallone Shop in coming weeks.
This year, Bartram’s Garden will debut a 75-foot-wide floating art installation, observation deck, and river access point dubbed the FloatLab. Set to open in the summer, the work of art will be housed on the southern shoreline of the historic venue and will offer panoramic river and city skyline views. Designed by Höweler + Yoon Architecture in collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia and Bartram’s Garden, FloatLab will be free and accessible to the public once it opens.
