Matvei Michkov shines as Flyers take down Avalanche for second-straight win

The sun is finally shining in Philadelphia after a torrid start to the season

The Philadelphia Flyers are finally starting to find their footing after a disastrous start to the 2026-27 season. Philadelphia defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Monday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena, securing its second consecutive victory after opening the season with nine straight games without a win.

Matvei Michkov was the difference-maker for the Flyers, recording two goals, while Trevor Zegras contributed three assists. Despite being without several key players, including Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster, Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen, the home team found a way to compete against one of the NHL's more talented teams.

Michkov opened the scoring at 7:41 of the first period with a power-play goal, giving Philadelphia an early advantage. Colorado challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the goal stood. The 21-year-old forward continued his impressive performance in the second period, scoring his second goal of the night at 12:23 to extend the Flyers' lead to 2-0. Michkov now has six goals on the season and has scored in three consecutive games.

Colorado responded late in the second period when Martin Necas scored to cut Philadelphia's lead in half. However, the Flyers answered in the third period when Noel Acciari redirected a shot from Oliver Bonk into the net at 6:34, restoring the two-goal advantage. It was Acciari's first goal as a member of the Flyers.

The Avalanche refused to go away quietly, as T.J. Hughes scored with just over five minutes remaining to make it a one-goal game. Colorado continued applying pressure in the closing minutes, but goaltender Joseph Woll stood tall, finishing with 24 saves and earning his first victory in a Flyers uniform.

What stood out about Philadelphia's performance was the team's ability to generate offensive opportunities and capitalize on them, something that had been missing throughout its early-season struggles. The Flyers played with more confidence, demonstrated better puck movement and received contributions from their younger players.

Zegras continues to establish chemistry with Michkov, and that connection could become an important part of Philadelphia's offensive success moving forward. Meanwhile, younger players such as Bonk and Denver Barkey contributed offensively, showing what the next generation of Flyers talent can bring to the lineup.

However, the Flyers still have areas that need improvement. Philadelphia allowed Colorado to climb back into the game twice and struggled to maintain possession during stretches of the third period. Against a team with the Avalanche's offensive firepower, those mistakes can quickly change the outcome.

After starting the season 0-6-3, Philadelphia has now won back-to-back games against Ottawa and Colorado, improving to 2-6-3. While two victories do not erase the team's early struggles, the Flyers are beginning to show signs of life.

The biggest question moving forward is whether Philadelphia can build consistency from these performances rather than returning to the same mistakes that plagued the opening nine games.

The Flyers will look to extend their winning streak Wednesday when they travel to Buffalo to face the Sabres.
