Flyers' historic nightmare continues with embarrassing 2-1 loss to Detroit

The Flyers' horrific start to the season is showing no signs of changing anytime soon.

The Philadelphia Flyers have officially reached a new level of embarrassment. Following Thursday night's 2-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia remains winless through its first nine games of the 2026-27 season, falling to 0-6-3 and extending the worst start in franchise history.

At this point, the concerns surrounding this team go far beyond wins and losses. The Flyers continue to display an alarming lack of offensive production, urgency, and execution. Despite taking an early lead, Philadelphia once again failed to capitalize on opportunities and allowed another winnable game to slip away.

Matvei Michkov provided the Flyers' lone goal late in the first period, giving Philadelphia a 1-0 advantage. However, that would be the extent of the team's offensive output. Detroit responded in the second period when Anton Johansson capitalized on a 2-on-1 opportunity following a Flyers turnover, tying the game at one.

With just 4:38 remaining in regulation, Andrew Copp delivered the game-winning goal, exposing Philadelphia's inability to execute defensively in critical moments.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this loss was the Flyers' inability to generate consistent offensive pressure. Philadelphia finished with just 18 shots on goal, compared to Detroit's 26, and went scoreless on both power-play opportunities. The Flyers have now managed just 11 goals through nine games, an unacceptable level of production for a team desperately searching for its first victory.

Joseph Woll made 24 saves and once again gave Philadelphia an opportunity to remain competitive, but the lack of offensive support continues to be a glaring issue.

The reality is that this team is not simply experiencing a rough stretch. The same problems continue to surface night after night: costly turnovers, defensive breakdowns, ineffective special teams, and an inability to sustain pressure in the offensive zone. There is little evidence of meaningful improvement, and the lack of results raises serious questions about the direction of this team.

Nine games into the season, the Flyers have yet to find a way to win. For a franchise attempting to establish a competitive identity, this historically poor start is nothing short of embarrassing. Something needs to change, because what Philadelphia is currently putting on the ice is simply not good enough.
